Spring (March to May)

Maldives

The Maldives is a tropical paradise in spring – you’re catching the end of the dry season when temperatures hover between 28C and 32C, and there’s minimal rainfall and low humidity.

The clear skies and calm waters provide excellent conditions for snorkelling and diving. With visibility often exceeding 30m (98ft), you can explore the vibrant coral reefs and encounter a wide array of marine life, including sea turtles and gentle whale sharks.

The weather is ideal for water activities, such as kayaking, paddleboarding and sailing, though you could also just relax on the islands’ pristine sandy beaches or indulge in a luxurious spa treatment at one of the many private island resorts.

Don’t miss: Spotting whale sharks and mantra rays that come to feed on plankton on the western sides of the atolls.

Cancun, Mexico

There’s a reason American spring breakers flock to Mexico in March and April. Another tropical destination in the midst of dry season, Mexico is brilliant this time of year, with temperatures between 25C and 32C, minimal rainfall and no risks of hurricanes.

If you’re planning to use Cancun as a base to explore the area, you’ll have plenty on your doorstep, from the Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza and vibrant Great Maya Reef to the enticing blue-green cenote swimming holes a little further inland.

Spring is also a great time to experience Cancun’s vibrant culture. Festivals to keep an eye on include the Cancun-Riviera Maya Wine and Food Festival and the Cancun International Jazz Festival.

Dubai, UAE

Can you handle the heat? Dubai in spring can be sweltering, with temperatures hitting 23C to 36C, but it’s a great time to score a cheaper deal on hotels and flights.

A modern marvel on the edge of a desert, Dubai is unlike anywhere else – think of an urban playground filled with luxurious shopping, world-class dining and ‘seven-star’ hotels that cater to your every whim, and you're pretty much there.

Sights for your hit list include the Burj Khalifa (the world's tallest building), and the traditional gold and spice souks in old Dubai.

Elsewhere, you can get your adrenaline thrills in the desert on a dune-bashing Jeep ride or on the slopes of Ski Dubai (yep, really!).

Summer (June to August)

New York City, USA

New York City is fabulous all year round, but it really sings in summer. Warm and lively, with temperatures ranging from 20C to 30C, summer in the Big Apple is all about experiencing the city outdoors.

Take advantage of the sunshine by exploring Central Park, visiting the Statue of Liberty (or see it for free on the Staten Island Ferry) or walking the High Line, an elevated urban garden on a former railway line.

If the summer heat becomes too intense, consider taking a train out of the city to explore the beautiful countryside. The Hudson Valley, located just north of NYC, is a picturesque escape with charming towns, historic sites and outdoor activities.

Bali, Indonesia

Beach lovers and outdoor enthusiasts adore summer in Bali. It’s a true tropical paradise with plenty of sunshine and temperatures ranging from 23C to 33C.

Explorers should make a beeline for the island's iconic temples. The Uluwatu Temple, perched on a cliff overlooking the Indian Ocean, is perennially popular but you should also make time for the Besakih Temple, which is the largest and holiest Hindu temple in Bali.

Uluwatu’s legendary breaks tempt surfers looking for challenge or you can keep it low-key with a dip in the crystal-clear waters of the famous Kuta Beach.

Summer days in Bali are best finished at the island’s vibrant night markets. Two for your radar are the Gianyar Night Market and the Sindhu Market in Sanur, where you can sample local street food and shop for handcrafted souvenirs.

Los Angeles, USA

Summer is a great time to experience Los Angeles' thriving arts and culture scene, with numerous food and music festivals taking place under warm, sunny skies.

With temperatures hitting around 29C, it’s ideal beach weather too. Spend a few days sunbathing on LA’s iconic Venice Beach, leaving enough time to explore nearby Santa Monica Pier too.

If you want to escape the city hustle and bustle, drive along the picturesque Pacific Coast Highway to the charming coastal town of Santa Barbara, just a couple of hours north.

Autumn (September to November)

Cape Town, South Africa

When it's autumn in the UK, Cape Town in South Africa is stepping into spring. It’s mild but pleasant, with temperatures between 15C and 25C, and the added bonus of fewer crowds.

You can explore the outdoors by taking a cable car to the top of Table Mountain, hiking through lush forests, or driving along the stunning Chapman's Peak. Visit the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden to see vibrant spring flowers and enjoy a picnic in the tranquil surroundings.

For something more cultural, discover the colourful Bo-Kaap neighbourhood, known for its brightly painted houses and rich Cape Malay heritage, or explore Cape Town's thriving food and wine scene at the famous Biscuit Mill market.

Don’t miss: A day trip to the nearby wine regions of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek.

Mauritius

Mauritius is an adventurer’s paradise and it’s all the more pleasant in autumn with the mercury hovering between 20C and 28C.

Take advantage of the slightly cooler temperatures to explore the island's lush interior, including the Black River Gorges National Park, where you can hike through dense forests and spot unique wildlife like the Mauritian flying fox and the Mauritius kestrel.

Autumn is also an excellent time for water activities, as the trade winds provide excellent conditions for kitesurfing, windsurfing and sailing. Or, head under the waters to explore a vibrant underwater world in the island's protected marine parks.

Of course, you could also simply enjoy the white-sand beaches at Belle Mare Plage or serene Le Morne and treat yourself to a truly relaxing holiday.

Toronto, Canada

Autumn in Toronto is a medley of colour, with the city’s autumn foliage aglow in red, orange and gold. It’s perfect city break weather too, with cool and comfortable temperatures between 7C and 18C.

For an immersive autumn experience, and to snap all those stunning colours, take a stroll through High Park or visit the nearby Algonquin Provincial Park.

If it gets a little chilly, you can always head indoors to check out the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Royal Ontario Museum or the CN Tower, which has breathtaking views of the city skyline.

Winter (December to February)

Florida, USA

Florida's winter months are mild and pleasant – far warmer than home (between 15C to 25C) but cool enough to enjoy all the best of the Sunshine State.

Families (and kids-at-heart couples) should head for Orlando’s theme parks. Without the scorching heat of the summer months, Walt Disney World and Universal Studios’ thrilling rides, enchanting shows and magical character encounters are doubly enjoyable.

Elsewhere? Explore the stunning beaches of Miami or take a drive along the scenic Overseas Highway to the Florida Keys, a string of tropical islands known for their laidback atmosphere and colourful coral reefs.

If you’re going this far, make sure to visit Key West, the southernmost point of the continental United States.

Bangkok, Thailand

Bangkok's wet season typically runs from May to October so winter, when temperatures are between 20C and 32C, is an ideal time to explore the city.

Take advantage of the dry season by visiting the Grand Palace, a stunning complex of ornate buildings and sacred temples, including the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, the most revered Buddhist temple in Thailand.

It’s also the perfect time to visit one of the world's largest outdoor markets, the vibrant Chatuchak Weekend Market, where you can find everything from handcrafted souvenirs and vintage clothing to delicious street food and live music.

Winter is also when Chinese New Year celebrations hit the city’s Chinatown, and the lantern-filled Loy Krathong festival takes place.

Goa, India

Warm temperatures between 20C and 32C make winter the prime time to visit the south-western Indian state of Goa.

Vibrant markets, such as the Anjuna Flea Market or the Mapusa Market, and stunning beaches, including popular Baga or secluded Agonda, should be high on your itinerary, as should Goa's famous seafood. Dishes like spicy Goan fish curry, tangy prawn balchão and crispy fried calamari are delicious and indulge-worthy.

As the sun sets, experience Goa's legendary nightlife, with countless clubs, bars and beach shacks offering lively music, colourful cocktails and an unforgettable party atmosphere.
