Paradise beaches fringed with palm trees, powder-white sands easing into the most inviting water you’ve ever seen, world-class snorkelling and scuba diving… this is a holiday to the Maldives – and yes, it really is this beautiful.

A mind-blowing beach for every day of the year. Stilted bungalows overlooking a million different shades of blue. Adventure when you want it. Relaxing spa days when you don’t. The Maldives is a special kind of beach holiday.

Stretching out across the shimmering blues of the Indian Ocean, the Maldives is made up of almost 1,200 islands and you can take your pick from 150-plus world-class resorts. From luxury all-inclusive resorts with private pools, spas, and personal butlers to affordable eco-lodges and budget hotels, there are package holidays for every kind of traveller.

Naturally, the Maldives' dreamy white-sand beaches are popular with couples and honeymooners. Families love it too, with a huge choice of activities for the kids, such as boat tours, kayaking, and surfing.

The islands’ reefs have some of the best diving and snorkelling in the world, making it popular with divers, who flock here to swim with tropical fish, manta rays, turtles, and reef sharks.

And if you’re looking for something local, you’ll find guesthouses and independent hotels on Malé and Ari.

Whatever your vision of paradise, you’ll find it on a holiday to the Maldives.

Luxury maldives holidays at 5 star hotels

One of the few Maldives' resorts with a golf course, Velaa Private Island in the Noonu Atoll takes luxury to another level. Every villa has a private butler, and the spa has a glass-sided sauna and over-water treatment rooms. Want to take it one step further? Book The Muraka in the Conrad Maldives Rangali Island resort. Because nothing says over-the-top opulence like an underwater bedroom. Yep, that’s right. The master bedroom is 16ft below sea

Where to stay in the Maldives

For families

Whether you're travelling with toddlers or teenagers, the Maldives is a great pick for family holidays. A short speedboat ride from Malé airport is Kurumba Maldives, the original Maldivian resort, which opened in 1972. Swim, snorkel or kayak to the nearby reef, dance with Maldivian entertainers, and build bright-white sandcastles on the beach.

Alternatively, Siyam World in Noonu Atoll is a win for older children, with loads of island entertainment, including the Indian Ocean’s largest floating water park, Siyam Water World.

For couples

A short speedboat ride from Malé, Gili Lankanfushi is the epitome of sustainable luxury in the Maldives. Try a signature massage in the overwater Meera Spa, enjoy fine dining with your toes in the sand, or cool off with a little cheese and wine in the quirky underground wine cellar. For a truly idyllic honeymoon, you could book one of the Robinson Crusoe residences, and play castaways on a “deserted” island reached only by boat.

For all-inclusive holidays

Kudadoo Maldives in Lhaviyani Atoll is the perfect spot for an intimate all-inclusive holiday. With endless champagne, private yoga sessions, and unlimited spa treatments – and only 15 other villas to share it all with – you won’t want to leave here in a hurry.

For families, Club Med's all-inclusive Maldives resort, Club Med Kani, is the ideal all-inclusive escape. It's an easy boat transfer from Malé airport, so you can be on the beach within an hour.

For beach holidays

On magical Muravandhoo in the Raa Atoll, JOALI is an imaginative beach stay for couples. Couples can do sunrise yoga on the beach, ride sea bobs or just potter about the resort, exploring the private coves of the island.

Baglioni Resort on Maagau Island, meanwhile, brings a touch of Italy to its powder-soft white sands, lush natural spa and rich coral reef restoration efforts.
