You can easily stroll around the beautiful fishing port of Corralejo on Fuerteventura, taking in the traditional houses and glimmering coast. But when you’re ready for an adventure around Spain’s second largest Canary Island, simply pick up a hire car from Corralejo and hit the open road.

Fuerteventura is incredibly easy to get around. From Corralejo, hop on the FV-1 to explore Playa Blanca, Playa de Esquinzo and plenty more of the island’s most idyllic stretches of sand.

Take the same road in the other direction for the east coast beaches or drive all the way to the salt flats of Salinas del Carmen in just under an hour. Elsewhere, the island’s first capital, Betancuria, is around an hour inland along the FV-30. Visit for cobbled streets and colonial architecture.

There are a few things to keep in mind when driving in Spain. First, you’ll need to drive on the right-hand side of the road, and overtake on the left. Fines for speeding in Spain can be steep too, so be sure to stick to the limits while you’re out there.

In most cases, that’s 20km/h (12 mph) in residential areas, 50km/h (31 mph) in urban locations, 90km/h (56 mph) in rural zones and 120km/h (75 mph) on the motorway. Look out for roadside signs.

When it’s time to park up back in town, keep your eyes open for Parkplatz signs. There’s plenty lining Avenue Fuerteventura, as well as those by the beaches at Playa Puerto Remedios and Playa Larga.
