Located in northwest England, St Helens and the surrounding areas have plenty to keep you busy and entertained. There’s the rugby, of course, but other highlights include the World of Glass visitor centre and the North West Museum of Road Transport, which is home to a collection of vintage buses.
When it comes to exploring destinations further afield (the famous cities of Liverpool and Manchester are both within easy reach), simply pick up a hire car close to St Helens Central train station and hit the road.
With your own four wheels, you can travel when you want, make as many unplanned stops as you like and avoid the hassle of public transport.

While there are no dedicated car hire desks within St Helens Central station, there are several companies within easy reach. They include:
Enterprise, on Liverpool Road, is around 20 minutes’ walk from the train station, while PSD Vehicle Rental, on Prescott Road, is an hour’s walk away, or ten minutes in a taxi. Hertz can be found on Andover Rd and is around 15 minutes in a cab. Book early and online to get the best deal.
St Helens is an incredibly well-connected town. The A580 will get you to Liverpool in around 40 minutes, or you can hop on the M62 to arrive in Manchester in less than an hour. Many other major cities, like Sheffield and Birmingham, are just a couple of hours away via the M6.
For something a little different, consider a trip to the Clwydian Range and Dee Valley in Wales, a designated National Landscape (also known as Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty in Wales, Northern Ireland and England).
The main roads through the town – James Roby Way and the A58 – make getting to local sights just as easy. As you’d expect, the roads and the nearby motorway junction are busy during the morning and evening rush hours.
When you’re ready to leave your wheels and explore the town, there are plenty of parking options in and around the centre. The car parks at Birchley Street, St Helens Central Station and the Millennium Centre are all open 24 hours a day and accept long-term stays.
