Holidays in Indonesia

Indonesia is popular with backpackers who like to hop from beach to temple to mountain and then back to the beach. If you want to keep things simple and book a package holiday to Indonesia, beautiful, beguiling Bali is ideal.

Holidays in Indonesia are richly rewarding; you’ll have a lot to tell your friends about when you get home from a week or two visiting this Asian-spiced archipelago nation.

The beach paradise island of Bali is the main attraction for British holidaymakers. With its aquamarine waters and white sugar sands, it’s not hard to see why. But it’s not all about the beaches in Bali. This island, which is popular with families and couples as well as backpackers, is packed with culture, wildlife and history, as well as hundreds of options for active types.

The main beach resorts in the south of Bali are Kuta, Nusa Dua, Legian and Seminyak. On the north coast are the beach towns of Lovina and Pemuteran.

The main airport on the island is Bali Ngurah Rai International Airport, also known simply as Denpasar (DPS). In South Bali, it affords easy access to the southern beach resorts but is two to three hours away from Lovina and Pemuteran, making these resorts naturally quieter than those in the south.

Kuta is by far the biggest and busiest beach resort in Bali. The town is known for lively nightlife, great surf and eateries that wouldn’t look out of place on your local high street; although there are authentic Indonesian restaurants if you don’t fancy fried chicken or burgers.

Nusa Dua features a clutch of luxury beachside hotels, while Seminyak offers more in the way of shops and nightlife (though not on the scale of Kuta). Legian offers luxury hotels and simple beachside bungalows, plus a lovely beach and plenty of places to eat and drink.

Ubud is the cultural heart of Bali. Located amid the island’s lush and hilly interior, this welcoming town has a thriving arts scene, wonderful hotels, a popular monkey forest and is the place to go for traditional Balinese culture.

Cheap holidays are easy to come by if you are planning a break in Bali. Compare prices on a range of fantastic holidays using the TravelSupermarket search tool.

Find out when to take your holiday in Indonesia with our guide on when to go…

With average daytime temperatures in the high 20s throughout the year, it is rain you need to take into account when planning your trip. The wettest months in Bali are December and January, with heavy rainfall possible at any time between November and April. The driest months are between June and October. Just like anywhere in the tropics, rain clouds can arrive suddenly, empty quickly and give over to clear skies and sunshine.

Excluding Christmas and New Year, November to February is the quietest – and the cheapest – time to visit Bali.

When it comes to Indonesia, holiday experiences are unique and unforgettable…

Romance: There are a number of truly magnificent Bali beach hotels that raise the stakes in terms of luxury and romance. Bungalows that hover over the water on stilts are perfect for loved-up couples wishing to spend some quiet time together.

Active types: Go river rafting in Bali for a major rush of adrenaline. Day trips are available from most resorts. Alternatively, check out the world-class diving opportunities around the neighbouring island of Lombok.

Free and cheap: For a few pounds, you can pick up some snorkelling gear and explore the underwater world just off the coast. Free beach games such as football and Frisbee are also popular on the livelier stretches of sand.

Shopping: When darkness falls, your local town will buzz with the sound of a night market. Taste cheap and traditional dishes and pick up bargain souvenirs. The market in Sanur is one of the best in South Bali.

Nightlife: The undisputed nightlife capital of Bali is Kuta. There are bars, clubs, cabaret venues, themed pubs, discos, plus every other kind of evening entertainment.

A colourful calendar of events takes place each year in Indonesia. Find out what’s on in Bali during your stay…

Bali Spirit Festival; March/April: Ubud hosts this annual celebration of yoga, music, dance and spiritual healing. Visitors from around the world descend on Ubud for the festival, so book holidays well in advance to secure your stay.

Arts Festival; June-July: The rich cultural heritage of Bali is proudly displayed at this month-long feast of music, art, dance and more. The annual kite festival at Sanur Beach is part of this event; it attracts huge crowds and massive kites to Sanur.

Ubud Writers & Readers Festival; October/November: The cultural hub of the island is once again home to one of Bali’s biggest events. This time visitors gather to hear guest speakers, attend writing workshops and see local performers on the fringe of the main event. Once again, it is essential to book your break well in advance if you plan to be in Ubud at this time.
