Holidays in Jordan

Tread in the sandy footsteps of Lawrence of Arabia and Indiana Jones when you book holidays in Jordan. Visitors to this enchanting and welcoming Middle East nation have plenty of adventures in store.

It’s easy to find cheap holidays to Jordan with TravelSupermarket. Read on to discover more about this fascinating nation…

Wedged between Israel and Saudi Arabia, and with a slip of a coastline on the Red Sea, the Arab kingdom of Jordan is an affluent nation that has a wealth of natural resources and a rich history.

Nowhere is the past so vividly etched upon the landscape as it is at Petra, Jordan’s major tourist attraction.

The Rose City of Petra, so called for the colour of the sandstone from which it is carved, was once an important trade site and home to thousands. These days, more than half a million people make the dusty pilgrimage into the gorges of the mountains to see the breath-taking buildings that were shaped by hand into the rock. As you journey along the “Siq”, or mountain passage towards the ancient treasury, you are certain to hum the tune from “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade” as the home of the fictional Holy Grail comes into view. It is aa unforgettable experience.

Also in the south of Jordan is Wadi Rum, or the Valley of the Moon. TE Lawrence passed through this arid valley many times and filmmakers used the site in the 1962 classic, ‘Lawrence of Arabia’.

Then there’s the Red Sea resort of Aqaba too, which is known for supreme diving and snorkelling opportunities, and the Jordanian shores of the Dead Sea, where visitors fling themselves into the cleansing mud and float effortlessly on the water.

Elsewhere in Jordan, holidays can be taken in one of the excellent hotels in Amman, the capital and largest city. This vast city is one of the world’s oldest and it dazzles with ancient monuments, landmark mosques and sprawling mansions. Luxury brands, such as Marriott, Le Meridien, Four Seasons and Grand Millennium, operate hotels here. Many of the best have swimming pools, into which can dive and cool off after a day’s sightseeing. When to go to Jordan

Sizzling summer heat is to be expected in this part of the world. Find out more about the climate in Jordan…

Average temperatures in July and August can reach well beyond 30C at the peak of the day’s sun, especially in Petra. Amman sees highs only a degree or two cooler than Petra - still hot enough to make air conditioning in your hotel highly recommended during summer visits.

With temperatures in the mid-20s, spring and autumn are also pleasant times to visit Jordan, and probably much more comfortable for sightseeing.

Winter tourism, meanwhile, is low-key, although cool days and thin crowds please those who simply want to explore the sights at leisure.

What to do in Jordan

Here are a few ideas of things to see and do during your holiday in Jordan…

Grown-up families: The ruins of the Citadel of Amman are certainly impressive, but it is the extensive views of the city from up high that really captivate.

Relaxing: Day trips to the Dead Sea are readily available from Amman. What better way to unwind than in these calm waters, where an extremely high salt content allows guests to simply lie back and float.

Active types: Much of Petra can be seen easily on foot, or visitors can pay for a camel ride around the main sights. However, keen adventurers will not want to miss the chance to see the Monastery, which can only be reached by climbing nearly 1,000 steps. The views from the top are a fine reward.

From fast cars to folklore, the annual calendar in Jordan features a varied line-up of events…

Jordan Rally; April/May: One of the highlights of the motorsports calendar in the Middle East, spectators can catch the high-speed action from a number of vantage points in and around Amman and on the Dead Sea coast.

Jerash Festival for Culture and Arts; June: Just over an hour by road from Amman is the ancient city of Jerash, home to the ruins of the Greco-Roman city of Gerasa. A few hours here is worth the journey alone, but come in June when a feast of traditional music, dance and theatre celebrate creativity within the Arab world.

Citadel Nights in Amman; dates change each year: If you are in Jordan during Ramadan, be sure to join the welcoming hosts of Citadel Nights, who share a lively programme of authentic food, age-old stories, and classical Arabic music.
