Holidays in Montenegro

As neighbouring Croatia continues to win the hearts of British visitors, it is only a matter of time before holidays in Montenegro become the hottest ticket on the European tourism scene.

Located to the south of Croatia and across the Adriatic Sea from Italy, Montenegro is a compact nation that packs a lot within its borders. It has snow-capped mountains, towns with ancient tales to tell, a scintillating beach scene and gorgeous lakes that lure visitors to the country’s rugged interior.

In the 1990s, the wars in the former Yugoslavia were a serious setback for the burgeoning tourism scene on this coastline. But in these days of peace, tourist numbers continue to swell – little wonder given the raw beauty and fascinating history of this land.

In summer, in-the-know Europeans flock to Montenegro’s glorious beaches, which are every bit as dazzling as those in neighbouring Croatia. Pale sands and turquoise waters nestle up against honey-hued towns, where church spires and treetops interrupt terracotta skylines.

The Budva Riviera is the main centre for seaside tourism in Montenegro. Along with the town of Budva, popular tourist areas such as Becici and Petrovac are located along this glittering 22-mile stretch of shoreline. Book a Montenegro holiday in any of these areas and enjoy pristine beaches, excellent hotels and all-inclusive resorts, plus a welcoming collection of bars and restaurants.

The stunning Bay of Kotor, which boasts UNESCO-listed Kotor town as its prize jewel, is also a popular holiday hotspot.

Learn about the climate of Montenegro with our guide to when to go…

Montenegro enjoys a typical Mediterranean climate of warm, dry summers and mild, damp winters. The main tourist season begins when daytime temperatures begin to hit 20C+ in May. Holidays remain popular throughout the summer months into late September/early October, when the mercury begins to drop below 20C during the day.

July and August are busy months on Montenegro’s beaches, with visitors lured to the water’s edge during long, hot, sunny days when temperatures can reach beyond 30C. It’s wise to book your Montenegro break as far in advance as possible if you plan to travel at the height of the summer season.

Montenegro is a great destination for couples, groups and older families. Here are just a few ideas of things to do…

Romance: Take your loved one for a day of indulgence in the upmarket marina of Tivat, which sits on the Bay of Kotor (it’s a 30-minute journey by road from Budva). Designer boutiques, exquisite eateries and romantic seafront walks surround the sparkling waters and million-pound yachts.

Active types: Journey inland to Skadar Lake (Skadarsko) – one of the most picturesque places in Montenegro. Walking and cycling trails weave around the area offering magnificent views, while access to local caves will give adrenaline junkies a giddy thrill.

Free and cheap: While Budva is the centre for nightlife on the coast of Montenegro, it also has a wealth of historic and cultural treasures. It costs nothing to explore this ancient town, where churches and monasteries punctuate the street scene. There are also numerous free performances staged throughout the summer months.

Summertime is party time in Montenegro; check out these top annual events…

Spring Break Montenegro; June: Thousands of students arrive on the sands of Kamenovo Beach (near Becici/Budva) to let their hair down and dance to the very loud beats from the DJ box. The party atmosphere is electric (but not ideal for a hushed holiday in this part of the Budva Riviera).

Sea Dance Festival; July: The campground at Jaz Beach, also on the Budva Riviera, is overrun by a large party-hungry crowd at this annual event in mid-July. With artists such as The Prodigy and Underworld taking to the stage, you know this isn’t going to be quiet.

The Night of Petrovac; August: Follow your nose to Petrovac on the Budva Riviera at the end of August, when a mountain of fresh fish sizzles on grills and local wine flows. There is live music throughout the day and evening before fireworks light the night sky as the celebrations come to an end in this normally quiet town.
