Holidays in Magaluf

A pristine coastal chill-out by day and a flashing neon playground for adults by night, Magaluf is Majorca’s party capital. But that’s not all the seaside town is about. Beyond the bars, international DJs and nightclubs, there’s plenty of fun to be had by all ages on a Magaluf holiday, both in town and by the sea.

All-inclusive hotels and brolly-shaded sun-loungers line the sandy seafront in Magaluf, stretching all the way to Palma Nova. There are cheap digs to be found, as well as high-end hotels and family-friendly accommodation, all catering to sun-seekers looking for a classic summer break.

Here to party? The busy centre of Magaluf is home to the town’s famous nightlife. Along the main strip that runs from Punta Ballena to Avenida Magaluf, bars, pubs and nightclubs serve cocktails and pump out music until dawn. A relatively contained area, it’s easy to walk to the action from your hotel – and equally easy to avoid it if the bar scene isn’t for you.

You see, Magaluf is no longer all about epic late nights. In recent years, the resort has made an effort to soften its image as a party destination, working hard to attract holidaymakers with kids in tow. Hotels are now better equipped – several feature kids’ clubs – and there’s a lot more choice in terms of kid-friendly activities and attractions, including the longstanding Western Water Park.

Magaluf’s close proximity to Majorca’s cosmopolitan capital, Palma, is a bonus for holidaymakers. The transfer from the airport can be as quick as 25 minutes outside of peak traffic, and it’s ideal for a day trip. Whether you fancy boutique shopping, fine dining or a spot of history and culture, there’s something for all interests in the swanky city. And it’s well-connected to Magaluf by bus or boat.

When to go to Magaluf

The party in Magaluf kicks off in June and is non-stop until the end of August. This is the peak summer season when the beach is at its busiest, and the weather is at its warmest. Expect highs of 30C in July and August, or a milder 27C in June.

In September, the resort starts to quieten down, but the bars and attractions remain open (shorter queues are a bonus here). It’s a great time to find cheap holidays to Magaluf, and the average temperature is still around 21C with little sign of rain.

Winter in Magaluf attracts an older crowd and golfers. Keep in mind that many theme parks and attractions shut up shop this time of year, and many of the livelier bars shut down during the week. In January, the temperature drops to around 9C, but it starts to pick up again in March, reaching highs of 17C.

What to do in Magaluf

Magaluf holidays are made of sun, sea, sand and lazy days. But, if you do want peel yourself off your sun-lounger, there’s plenty to keep you busy. Fill your days with jet-ski rides, glass-bottomed boat trips and heady booze cruises, or head to one of the many family-friendly attractions instead.

Western Water Park

With adrenaline-pumping slides, a lazy river and a dedicated children’s area, Western Water Park is geared towards the entire brood.

Shoot down The Beast’s 30-metre (98ft) near-vertical drop or, for those who are after something a little less nerve-racking, share an inflatable ring with friends on the Gran Cañon mega slide. This popular waterpark is a short bus ride from Magaluf centre. Arrive early to beat the crowds.

Palma

Stylish and artsy, historic Palma is a pocket of culture not far from Magaluf. Explore the old town’s labyrinth of pretty backstreets and elegant architecture, discovering museums and galleries along the way (such as the Es Baluard Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art). La Seu, the Gothic cathedral, is a highlight and can be seen from across town.

Shopping is another draw to the capital. You’ll find everything from designer boutiques to a bustling marketplace, and several cafes and tapas bars to keep you going throughout the day.

Magaluf Beach

With its soft golden sand and calm turquoise waters, it’s easy to see why this coastal spot was chosen as a holiday resort destination back in the 1960s.

These days, Magaluf Beach is lined with sun-loungers, beach bars and watersports facilities – everything you need for a memorable day by the sea. If you fancy a change of scenery, the quiet coves at Cala Vinyes and Cala Cap Falco are also stunning and within a short drive.

Katmandu Park

In a resort that’s known for non-stop fun, it’s fitting that there’s a theme park smack bang in the centre. Play mini-golf, shoot zombies in a virtual rollercoaster or cool down in the splash park. Many of the attractions at Katmandu Park are family-friendly, such as the five-level soft play area and “The House of Magic”.

There’s also the option of staying at the onsite themed hotel, where you benefit from a Play Pass that provides access to many of the park’s attractions every day of your holiday.

Pirates Adventure show

Acrobatics, dance and a bit of comedy thrown in for good measure, this is Magaluf’s swashbuckling interactive evening show. Its popularity among visitors goes without saying, having run for more than 30 years.

A ticket includes seats at a pirate-themed table, dinner, and drinks on tap. There’s a family-friendly version for all ages or a raunchier adult-only show, called Pirates Reloaded, later in the evening.
