Holidays in Tanzania

Lounging on pearl-white beaches, exploring a rainbow-coloured underwater world, haggling at the patchwork of stalls in ancient Stone Town’s market… you can do it all on package holidays to Tanzania.

A spicy Indian Ocean experience awaits for those who book holidays in Tanzania with TravelSupermarket...

Home to the majestic Mount Kilimanjaro and an impressive variety of African wildlife, Tanzania entices visitors looking for outdoor adventures and safari experiences. However, if you are looking for the most amazing beaches in Tanzania, holidays must be taken on the beautiful shores of Zanzibar.

Made up of a group of islands, Zanzibar is a paradise destination in the Indian Ocean. Many of the hotels on the islands have four or five stars and specialise in transforming holiday dreams into blissful reality. The majority of hotels are on the main island of Zanzibar and offer luxurious breaks on an all-inclusive basis.

Book a holiday to Tanzania with Zanzibar as your destination and you are likely to land at Dar es Salaam International Airport, on the mainland, before making the quick hop to Zanzibar’s Abeid Amani Karume Airport.

Once you step off that plane and check in at your hotel, the journey to reach these gorgeous shores will quickly slip into a distant part of your mind. Sink your toes into the warm sands and let Zanzibar breathe new life into your weary soul. When you are feeling fully rejuvenated (it doesn’t take long), there is plenty to see and do. Tour the ancient streets of Stone Town, once a hub of the busy spice trade. Alternatively, dip into the warm waters and swim with dolphins, or take a snorkel and mask into shallows that teem with marine life. The forests of the main island are rich with life too; Jozani Forest is an ideal place to spot Red Colobus monkeys.

Is this beginning to sound like an unforgettable place to visit? We think so. Find cheap holidays to Tanzania and Zanzibar now by comparing prices on TravelSupermarket.

Use our brief guide to the weather in Zanzibar to figure out when to go…

There are four seasons in Zanzibar: two wet and two dry. Many holidaymakers arrive here during the longer dry season between June and September, when daytime temperatures range between 25C and 30C and humidity is at a moderate level. The other dry season is at the start of the year, though humidity levels are higher. The peak months for travel are July and August so consider looking for holidays in June and September for great weather, fewer fellow tourists and competitive holiday prices. Bargain breaks can be booked during the wet seasons – it rarely rains all day in the tropics and showers are warm (and sometimes quite refreshing), so don’t be put off.

Whether you want to flop on the sands, explore the rich heritage or go in search of wildlife, there is much on offer in Zanzibar…

Relaxing: There are plenty of ways to unwind when you land on the paradise shores of Zanzibar. After you’ve lounged on the white sands during the day, consider booking a sunset cruise to round off your day.

Free and cheap: For just a few pounds, you can join a guided cycling tour. Not only is it an eco-friendly way to get around, it is cheap and a wonderful way to get to know the island.

Shopping: Darajani Market, in Stone Town, is a brilliantly hectic jumble of stalls. From freshly prepared food and locally made trinkets to bags of spice and fresh fruit, this is the most authentic shopping experience in Zanzibar.

Sauti za Busara; February: Visit Stone Town in Zanzibar during this four-day festival to shop at the markets and see traditional music, song and dance.

Mwaka Kogwa Festival; July: Help villagers to start the Shirazi New Year with a host of ancient rituals. You might be best leaving the locals to their mock fights and symbolic fires, but you will be made most welcome at any one of the lively celebrations in Zanzibar.

Zanzibar Cultural Festival; July: The culture of the islands is proudly showcased during this annual event. While much of the action takes place in the main town of Zanzibar, the nearby island of Pemba also hosts bullfighting shows.
