What to do in Sa Coma

The beach may be the main draw on a Sa Coma holiday, but beyond the silky sand and calm waters, there are plenty of things to do – explore a protected nature reserve, discover how an ancient society once lived, and play 18 holes on a course with unforgettable views.

Sa Coma Beach

The twin bays of Sa Coma and neighbouring S’Illot are at the centre of any escape to this Majorcan town. Hire a sun-lounger and thatched parasol, or pitch your own umbrella near the water’s edge, and while the day away.

The calm waters here are also perfect for a pedalo or for younger ones to paddle. For something a little more active, rocky coves at either end of the 700-metre-long beach create breakers ideal for surfers and wind-surfers.

Punta de n’Amer

Positioned on the picturesque coastal headland separating Sa Coma and neighbouring Cala Millor, Punta de n’Amer is a protected 200-hectare nature reserve. There are several short walking trails through the reserve, passing sandy dunes and local varieties of plants.

You can take in sweeping ocean views from Castell de n'Amer, the 17th-century watchtower at the highest point of the reserve. Inside, you’ll see some of the original weapons used to defend this strip of coastline.

Safari Zoo

After a change of scenery? The Safari Zoo, a wildlife park with more than 600 animals, is just a short walk from town.

Drive the park’s 3km (1.8 miles) course or ride the safari train to spot giraffes, zebras, rhinos and monkeys. There’s even a playground for your own little monkeys to enjoy after their wildlife adventure. A free shuttle bus to the zoo runs from a number of stops in the resort.

S’Illot archaeological site

Neighbouring S’Illot is home to one of the best-preserved and most important archaeological sites in the Balearic Islands. The prehistoric settlement offers a window into the island’s ancient history with the earliest elements of the site dating from 2200BC.

Believed to have been built by the Iron Age Talaiotic people, the site once had around 35 stone houses. The visitor centre gives an insight into the daily lives of the civilisation.

Golf

Whether you play every week or are handling a club for the first time, golfers at all levels are well catered to in Sa Coma. Four golf courses are within a 20-minute drive, including Son Servera, the second oldest club in Majorca. Pula, meanwhile, has a championship course designed by legendary pro José María Olazábal.

Pint-sized putters can swing by Paradise Golf at the Protur Sa Coma Resort, home to two imaginative 18-hole mini-golf courses with waterfalls, tropical gardens and a small lake.
